EMDR - What is it?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapeutic intervention that allows you to process memories, including feelings and emotions related to traumatic events, in a way that can lead you towards healing. EMDR can be facilitated through movement on 2 sides of the body, such as tapping hands on each shoulder or moving both eyes from left to right. This body movement (from side to side) encourages the mind and body to be present within the moment, providing a calming effect. Examples of this calming body movement that may occur in your everyday life are swimming, biking, playing drums, walking and yoga.

This body movement, accompanied with thinking of and processing memories (with support and guidance from a trained professional) can point your brain in a direction towards relief.

EMDR is a therapeutic intervention facilitated during a 50-60 minute, individual counseling session. You can learn more about EMDR by visiting http://www.emdria.org.
